The Friends of St. Patrick are pleased to announce that the 70th annual Miller Place-Rocky Point St. Patrick’s Day Parade is scheduled for Sunday, March 15, 2020 starting at 1:00 p.m. sharp (Parade Has Been Cancelled).
It is with great pride and pleasure that the committee has named all former Grand Marshalls to be Grand Marshalls in this year’s parade. It is expected that a substantial number of former Grand Marshalls, who continue to be community leaders in our area, will accept this honor.
In lieu of naming a Queen and her Court, the Friends of St. Patrick have begun a scholarship fund for our local high schools. This year’s winner of a $1,000.00 scholarship is Alexa Zichinelli, a senior from Miller Place High School. Alexa wrote an excellent essay on Irish history and lore inspired by her great-great Grandma, Mary Margaret McArdle from County Clare.
Alexa will be studying pre-med in college and is an active athlete, musician, tutor and volunteer. She aspires to become a surgeon and be a part of Doctor With-out Borders.
Alexa and the former Grand Marshalls will be honored on our Luck of the Irish Casino night, being held at 7:00 p.m. at the East Wind Long Island in Wading River on Friday, March 6, 2020. This is our primary fundraiser and has been a huge success over the past few years. All are invited for food, drink and fun. For tickets and information, Contact Us Here.
The “Friends of St. Patrick” are pleased to announce, with great pride and pleasure that the committee has named John McNamara as Grand Marshal of this year’s parade. John and his wife, Kathy, have resided in Rocky Point since 1978, where they raised four children: Erin, John, Mark and Kathleen. They are the proud grandparents of six. John taught at Maria Regina High School in Uniondale, New York and has been the Youth Minister at St. Mark’s Parish in Shoreham since 1979. John has also been very involved in teaching and ministry at St. Louis de Montford in Sound Beach and at his home parish, St. Anthony’s in Rocky Point. John received a B.A. in Philosophy from Cathedral College and an M.A. in Theology from St. John’s University. John McNamara has accepted the honor of Grand Marshal of the 69th annual Miller Place-Rocky Point St. Patrick’s Day parade. Please come and support our local parade!
The “Friends of St. Patrick” are pleased to announce, with great pride and pleasure that the committee has named longtime committee member Andrew J. Streeff to be Grand Marshal of this year’s parade.
Andrew J. Streeff is the product of parents whose roots come from County Kildare and Finland. He first marched in the Miller Place-Rocky Point parade as a Cub Scout in 1971, and has been an avid supporter of the parade ever since. Mr. Streeff joined the Friends of St. Patrick in 2001 and has put in many hours over the years to help make our parade the success that it is.
Mr. Streeff has been in the restaurant industry for 40 years, and for the last 20 years he’s been owner and chef of the Hartlin Inn in Sound Beach. The Hartlin Inn is well known to our community, not only as a fine place to dine and meet friends, but as a staple in the community for supporting all local and scholastic organizations. Drew is the proud father of Daneal O’Leary, who along with her husband, Dan O’Leary, have given him grandchildren Roary, Brennan, Connor and Molly.
Mr. Streeff is marching in honor of his late business partner, Richie Hartig, who brought him into the Friends of St. Patrick in 2001. Unfortunately, Mr. Hartig passed away before the honor of Grand Marshal was bestowed upon him, even though he was most certainly worthy.
Mr. Hartig honorably served our nation in the U.S. Navy and went on to serve the citizens of Nassau County as a Detective in the Nassau County Police Department. Upon retirement, Mr. Hartig served as Commodore of the Mt. Sinai Yacht Club. Richie Hartig served as a mentor and an inspiration to so many young people over his lifetime.
It is in the honor of Richie Hartig that Andrew J. Streeff accepts the honor of Grand Marshal of the 68th annual Miller Place-Rocky Point St. Patrick’s Day parade.
The “Friends of St. Patrick” are pleased to announce, with great pride that the committee has named local hero, Joseph A. Cognitore, to be the 67th Grand Marshal at this year’s parade.
Joseph A. Cognitore proudly served in Vietnam from April 1969 through March 1971, where he held the ranks of “Acting Platoon Sergeant” and “Acting Platoon Leader”. For his valor on the battlefield and for his service to country, he earned the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge, as well as the National Defense, Vietnam Service, Vietnam Campaign, and Air Medals. He has been a member of the VFW since 1973 and serves as Commander of VFW Post 6249, Rocky Point.
For his services to the community, Mr. Cognitore has been honored by local legislators and civic associations. Having distinguished himself in both military and civilian life, he was inducted into the New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame in 2005.
Under his direction, the Suffolk County Veteran Commanders joined with the Long Island Home Building Corporation to provide homes for wounded veterans and their families. Most recently, Mr. Cognitore and the developer and owner of “Landmark Properties” were named “Times Beacon Record News 2016 People of the Year”, for building and giving homes to veterans.
Mr. Cognitore was instrumental in the creation of the Diamond in the Pines 9/11 Memorial, and in the German Shepherd Bronze Statue to honor the nation’s service dogs. Additionally, he helped the local Historical Society on the creation of the Civil War Memorial at Depot Park. Joe Cognitore is a moving force in supporting veterans’ causes, as well as local groups Because of his dedication and commitment to the country and to the Rocky Point community, it has been said that Joe Cognitore personifies everything, that a citizen should be, in terms of national and local service.
The Friends of St. Patrick are pleased to announce, that the Grand Marshal for the 66th Annual Miller Place - Rocky Point St. Patrick’s Day Parade is the current member, President John Barchi. Mr. Barchi has held other positions, during his tenure, within the organization, in addition to President, including Parade Chairman and Chairman of Public Relations.
“Being named Grand Marshal of this historic parade and working with a group of the most honest, loyal, and dedicated individuals, who put this project together, year after year, is nothing short of a great honor and privilege”, John responded, when asked about his being chosen, to lead this year’s parade. “Their commitment to this community event, and the camaraderie among us, is truly unique and amazing.”
Being a long-time resident of Port Jefferson, John attended and graduated from Earl L. Vandermeulen High School and, later NYIT in Old Westbury with a BFA, before departing to New York City, to enjoy a career as an art director in the world of advertising, on Madison Avenue. His experiences and expertise included working within all phases and aspects of print advertising, corporate identity, commercials, concept videos, as well as packaging, promotion, and display, amounting to a large roster of high visibility for local, national, and international clients.
More than 20 years later, John returned to the roots of his home area, shifted career gears and, soon, became a familiar face in the downtown area of Rocky Point as the co-proprietor, along with his chef-brother, Jim, at Gracie’s Hearty Foods & Spirits, formally known as Harry’s Bar. During his many years there, John and his brother not only served exceptional and robust food, but also friendly neighborly drink. Always accessible, John served within the community, by being a member of the Rocky Point Civic Association, Rocky Point Historical Society, BBCA, as well as in various other projects, events, and fundraisers, within the local hamlets. He was also recognized and named as businessman of the year, in 2007, by The Village Beacon Record.
Of late, John has to attend to some family matters, and he is currently working through personal health issues. While being out of the “circuit”, as he refers to not being as socially active, the parade planning and fundraising efforts, throughout the year, have kept him quite occupied. He is eager to get back to a normal routine again and being more productive. “Hopefully making this place, we live in, just a little nicer than we found it,” John quipped.
A special day awaits long time local resident Michael Tatilian on Sunday March 15, as the Friends of St. Patrick have proudly
selected one of its members to be Grand Marshal of their 65th Annual Miller Place-Rocky Point St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
During the early years of the parade’s existence, Michael’s family relocated from New Jersey to Sound Beach where he resides
today with his wife Kathleen and daughter Gabrielle. Influenced early on by his involvement in the food, beverage, and hospitality
industry, Michael has been a dedicated lifelong participant in the hospitality business, and has been directly involved in all its
phases and aspects.
Being employed at East Wind Caterers for more than 20 years, he has seen and been involved with its growth from its humble
beginnings of The Cottage at East Wind, through the various phases of expansion; to the current elegant The Inn at East Wind
which is host to the Friends of St Patrick’s Annual Cocktail-Dinner Party each year.
Since joining the Friends of St. Patrick in 1998, Mr. Tatilian has held the title of Parade Chairman and is current Vice President.
Being a man of many hats each worn well during his professional tenure, his talents and expertise have allowed Michael to soar in
working “behind the scenes” in the preparations in the parade’s annual organizational and fund raising efforts through his hard work
and due diligence. These efforts have proved to be nothing short of remarkable, and the results of which have always proved to be productive and fruitful, making
him a valuable asset to the Friends of St. Patrick organization, and in a role in which he truly enjoys.
“Being selected to be Grand Marshal of this parade is nothing short of an incredibly great honor” Michael was quoted when asked. “After all my years in bringing
enjoyable and memorable experiences to literally thousands of people during hundreds of diverse events over the years in the hospitality industry,” he continued; “
it is going to be quite the day to see tens of thousands of local residents come out, celebrate, and shine in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. I am very humbled yet
elated in my selection, as it’s a day that I’m won’t soon forget and really look forward to.”
It is with great pleasure that the Friends of St. Patrick proudly announces Father Richard Hoerning has been chosen to lead the
64th Annual Miller Place-Rocky Point St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday March 16, 2014.
Father Richard has been Pastor at St. Anthony’s of Padua RC Church in beautiful downtown Rocky Point since June, 2002. “I was
pleasantly surprised and honored to be named Grand Marshal and I feel it is also an honor for Saint Anthony’s Parish for all that
they do for the community,” Father Richard replied when asked about his selection.
Shortly after the Second World War in 1947, the shape of Long Island began to change as Levittown was born, and so was Father
Richard, for this was his family’s first home. Several years later his family moved to upstate New York in Wappinger Falls. It was
there in the 9th grade that Father Richard found his calling and entered the High School Seminary at Cathedral College High School
in Manhattan. Later while relocating with his family back to Long Island in Islip he continued his Seminary studies at St. Pius X
College in Uniondale, NY and Cathedral College in Douglaston, Queens. Father Richard then studied theology at the Immaculate
Seminary in Huntington. After 12 years of study and preparation, Father Richard was ordained a Priest on June 26, 1973.
His first Parish was at St. Mary’s in Manhasset. He then continued with teaching at St. Pius X Seminary in Uniondale, returned to
parish duties at St. Peter the Apostle in Islip Terrace, and then on to Infant Jesus in Port Jefferson. In 1990 Father Richard was named Pastor at St. Anthony’s
Parish in East Northport where he remained until June of 2002 when he then was named the Pastor at St. Anthony’s of Padua in Rocky Point.
“I’ve had so many wonderful memories and experiences here in Rocky Point” Father Richard continued. “The St. Patrick’s Day Parade for instance and the
Summertime Concert series in our parking lot. I am also proud of our great CYO youth program, participating in the 60th Anniversary of St. Anthony’s Parish and
the good and holy people of our Parish.”
